BACKGROUND

GeRAk SIlat Olahraga or popurlarly known as GRASIO is a type of Malay Martial Arts invented purposely for sport competition. GRASIO was established in Singapore by Mr. Sheik Allau'ddin, a two-times world champion (1990 and 1994) and 15 times Singapore National Champion from 1985 to 1999. He is currently the Chief Executive Director of the Singapore Silat Federation. More information about him can be found by following these links; 1: http://www.persisi.org/coaches/sheik.htm, 2: http://www.snoc.org.sg/p_sheik_alauddin.php

In its early period of establishment, GRASIO had only a few trainees who are highly motivated and committed to learn and develop the martial arts under the supervision of Mr Sheik. One of them is Mr. Ghazali Amin who has consistently trained and completed the program. Realizing the increasing interest in GRASIO and the benefits of its active and healthy activities, Mr. Ghazali has then decided, with the encouragement from Mr Sheik and co-partner Mr. Ron Barrington to open a centre of GRASIO in Blacktown, Australia.

GRASIO Australia has unofficially been operating since 2006. It has involved in several major Silat Competitions. In 2006, one of the members, Hazuan Ghazali was sent to Singapore for two months intensive training with Mr. Sheik before competing in a Silat Competition which was held on December in the same year. Hazuan has done very well in the competition where he won silver in match and bronze in artistic competition.

In 2007, GRASIO Australia was again invited to compete in Youth World Silat Championship which was held in Singapore. After training for 3 months in Sydney, mainly in Rely Gym, Hazuan has come back, again with a great success. Representing Australia, he has won 2 bronzes in match and artistic competition respectively.

GRASIO Australia would never reach this stage without the help of Mr. Ron Barrington and other private sponsors such as Zett Sports and Ms Virginia. We are thankful to them who have helped us in providing funds and place for training.

We invite those who are interested in learning this martial arts to join us. There is no age limit and no background in martial arts necesscary to become a member of GRASIO Australia. For further information, please contact
